Maxthon has been making web browsers for over a decade, but the Chinese company’s browser hasn’t exactly become a household name like Firefox, Chrome, or Internet Explorer. That could change next year, when as many as 100 million mobile devices are expected to ship with the Android version of Maxthon’s browser preloaded.
Maxthon has made a deal with Chinese chip maker MediaTek to include the browser on Android phones and tablets using the company’s chips. That’s expected to include devices from companies such as Lenovo, ZTE, Alcatel, and others.
While it’s likely that a huge number of those devices will be available primarily in China, MediaTek-powered tablets have started showing up in tablets from Acer and Lenovo which are sold in the US and Europe, among other places.
Maxthon’s Android browser supports all the usual goodies including tabbed browsing, prviate mode, and social sharing. It also has a couple of less common features including support for custom gestures, support for add-ons, and a Reader Mode which presents a simplified view of web pages.
The browser also synchronizes your tabs, favorites, and other data across devices.
