Graphics tablet maker Wacom has been making devices for artists and graphic designers for years, but typically the company’s tablets have been devices you plug into a computer allowing you to draw or digitally paint using pressure-sensitive input.

Soon the company is expected to launch its first tablet or tablets that you can use as standalone devices. There are indications that there may be both Windows and Android tablets in the works — and now it looks like we may find out exactly what Wacom has in store on August 20th.

The company posted a teaser video on YouTube this week, promising that Wacom’s “next creative evolution” is on the 20th.

There aren’t any real hints in the video — it simply shows the company’s existing products including Cintiq drawing tablets and the company’s stylus utilities for drawing on an iPad screen.

But in advance of the launch, Wacom is offering a chance to win what it’s calling the “Mobile Dream Tablet” by making a $200 pledge to support the Kickstarter campaign for an animated movie called Art Story.

Keep in mind, the company isn’t promising to give tablets to everyone who pledges — just to hold a drawing and give away a single tablet to someone who pledges $200 or more. Prizes will only be awarded if the Kickstarter campaign reaches its $350,000 goal.

Interestingly, that $200 pledge is the most expensive option on Wacom’s list. For less money you can enter to win a Cintiq 24HD graphics tablet which retails for $2500.

Does that mean the upcoming Mobile Dream Tablet will have a similarly high retail price? I wouldn’t bet on it… but it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Wacom doesn’t have a habit of targeting casual computer uses with its products. It makes high-end gear for professionals.

  1. Perhaps WACOM could come up with a way to convert tablets to use their pens.

    1. current tablets can’t run photoshop, Zbrush, Maya… ect and the technology isn’t in the pens… it’s in the sensitivity of their touch-screens.
