At a time when 1920 x 1080 pixel displays are becoming the norm for high-end Android smartphones, it’s not surprising that device makers are starting to cram full HD screens into 7 inch tablets as well. Asus and Google put a 1920 x 1200 pixel screen into the 2013 model Nexus 7 tablet, and it looks like Amazon’s about to follow suit for its new 7 inch Kindle Fire HD.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7 Thor

Amazon’s original Kindle Fire had a 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display. In 2012 the company introduced a Kindle Fire HD 7 with a 1280 x 800 pixel screen. Recent rumors suggest that the upcoming 2013 model will have a 1920 x 1200 pixel display — and according to specs that popped up recently at the GFXBench website, those rumors appear to be right.

The benchmarks seem to have gone missing, but you can find screenshots at the MobileRead forum.

The upcoiming tablet appears to be code-named Thor, and it appears to have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor and an operating system based on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

Earlier rumors and leaks suggest the next-gen Kindle Fire HD 8.9 will have the same processor an even-higher resolution 2560 x 1600 pixel display, while the new entry-level Kindle Fire will have a 1280 x 800 pixel screen — although it may use a slower TI OMAP 4 processor like older Kindle Fire tablets.

  1. I hope that the enhanced resolution comes sooner rather than later to
monitors. They have been stuck at 1920 x 1080 for way too long.
The lack of vertical resolution is particularly annoying, as the 16:9
aspect ratio monitors have given up quite a bit vertically vs. the old 4:3
monitors. I wish the mfrs stuck to the 16:10 format, instead of the
16:9 that’s all the rage nowadays.

    1. i actually wish they stick to the 4:3 more often.
dual monitors are great with 4:3, not so much with 16:10 or 16:9

      1. Go portrait, my ideal (and soon to be realised) setup is 3 27″ 2560×1440 displays in portrait. Works out as 16:9.5-ish at a resolution above 4k, viewing area similar to a 46″ TV (but then there’s bezel)
