The IFA trade show in Berlin is coming up in early September, and it looks like Samsung and Sony have a few big plans for the event. And when I say big, I mean phones with big screens, among other things.

Samsung’s expected to unveil the next product in its Galaxy Note line of enormous smartphones, Sony’s expected to introduce its next flagship phone, and Samsung’s long-rumored smartwatch could finally be made public.

Sony IFA teaser

Speaking to The Korea Times, a Samsung executive has confirmed that Sony plans to showoff the Samsung Galaxy Note III and the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch at its pre-IFA event on September 4th.

The Galaxy Gear is described a “new wearable concept device,” which suggests that it may not actually go on sale right away. But as expected, the smartwatch will be a companion for a smartphone. Samsung’s been working on flexible display technology for years, but according to the Samsung exec, the Galaxy Gear will not have a flexible display. Future devices might.

There are even fewer details about the next-generation Galaxy Note, but it’s safe to assume it’ll have a screen larger than 5 inches, an “S Pen” digital pen, a big battery, and a fast processor. Those are pretty much the hallmarks of every Galaxy Note released to date.

As for Sony, the company hasn’t confirmed any specs for its next-gen phone, but it has released a teaser video which provides a pretty good look at the case. It also shows the phone underwater, suggesting that like some of Sony’s other recent smartphones, the new smartphone will be waterproof.

Word on the street is that the phone will have a 20MP camera, 4K video recording capabilities, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, and other high-end specs. But Sony hasn’t yet confirmed any of those details.

Like Samsung, Sony is holding a pre-IFA press event on September 4th.
