Amazon’s expected to launch a new line of Android tablets this fall. But what about the company’s black and white eReader lineup? Is there a new model in the works to replace the Kindle Paperwhite?

While there has been leak after leak providing details about the company’s new tablets, I haven’t heard much about a new eReader from Amazon.

But there’s a good sign something’s going on in that department — Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite WiFi eReader is currently out of stock.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite

The Kindle Paperwhite features  6 inch, 768 x 1024 pixel display, a touchscreen, and a front-light. Prices normally start at $119 for a model with “Special Offers,” or ads on the home screen. An ad-free version typically sells for $139.

Both models are out of stock.

You can still buy a Kindle Paperwhite 3G for $179 and up, or a used Kindle Paperwhite for about $90.

But the fact that Amazon hasn’t restocked the Kindle Paperwhite WiFi suggests that the company may be clearing out remaining inventory to make room for a new model.

Or as Nate from The Digital Reader speculates, it’s also possible that Amazon has no plans at all to launch a new model this year. Instead the company may just be pushing its Kindle Fire tablets — although in that case, you’d think Amazon would continue to offer the Paperwhite indefinitely for folks that want longer battery life and a lighter device.

After all, there are a few other Kindle models still available — including the $239 Kindle DX 9.7 inch eReader. That model’s been around for a couple of years at this point. There’s no reason Amazon couldn’t continue to offer the Kindle Paperwhite for a few more years — especially since the competition is looking a bit weak these days, which means there may not be as much need to push new models with new features every 12 months.

  1. Amazon are still advertising the Paperwhite for pre-order in Europe. They will seel loads over here, that could well explain any temporary shortage in the US marketplace.

  2. today Amazon is anouncing kindle store for Mexico and the Paperwhite is aviable not only with amazon but in a library called Gandhi

  3. I’m very happy with the Kobo Glow, which is the direct competition. EPUB vs MOBI is irrelevant in the age of Calibre.

  4. Bot versions of the Kindle Paperwhite are available in Germany from Amazon.de

  5. Right on time. While it is too much to hope for an SD card slot, let’s hope the new version at least has a speaker. It would be nice if they smoothed out the screen lighting too – if Kobo can do it, Amazon can do it. So expect low or no stock of the existing model for a month or so, then an announcement of the new model. Then wait 3-6 weeks for it to actually appear. Then it sells out with stock hard to find for the next month or two. Then low stock again for the Holidays. Sheeesh, talk about lousy product management and order fulfillment…

  6. The cheaper un-backlit Kindle is still the superior option for serious readers, largely due to its physical buttons. I’d be happy if they upped the resolution on that one.

  7. Yesterday, on the front page of amazon.com (US), I saw them advertise the kindle paperwhite as “the world’s best selling e-book reader”. The paperwhite is a game-changer in the book and e-book industry; it’s revolutionary. I don’t expect them to create a new model for at least another year. The new model will probably be a little thinner, have better battery life, and will have less border around the sreen. Mark my words, they aren’t phasing it out. They are just selling TONS of them!
