At about the same time as Google started taking orders for the 2nd-generation Nexus 7 tablet today, the company pulled the plug on last year’s model. You can no longer order the original Nexus 7 from the Google Play Store.

That’s not a big disappointment, since the new model is better in almost every possible way. But the new Nexus 7 is also more expensive. The original model started at $199, but the new version sells for $229 and up.

The good news is that bargain hunters can still find the original at other stores, often for great prices.

For instance, Staples is offering the original Nexus 7 with 16GB of storage in stores for $180.

The 32GB model is an even better bargain at Staples. It’s selling for $200, which is about $50 below the list price. Unfortunately since these prices are only available in stores, your local store might not have this clearance item in stock. It’s probably a good idea to call ahead and check before heading to your nearest Staples.

Serious bargain hunters can pick up a refurbished model from Walmart for $149. That’s a pretty stellar price for a tablet with a 7 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor.

Of course, if you can afford to spend a little more, the new Nexus 7 does have more to offer. It’s powered by a faster Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, features 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, and has a 7 inch, 1920 x 1200 pixel display.

The new model also has front and rear cameras, while the original had just a front-facing camera. And there’s a notification light on the new model as well, something that was missing on last year’s tablet.
