Google’s Chrome web browser for Chrome OS, Windows, Mac, and Linux has a feature that lets the browser act like a remote desktop utility. Basically you can use Chrome Remote Desktop to login to another computer with Chrome installed and remote control that device from your web browser.

Soon you’ll be able to do it from your Android phone or tablet.

Chromoting app for Android

Google evangelist François Beaufort notes that the developers behind Chrome are working on a Chromoting app for Android.

That means you’ll be able to fire up the app on your mobile device and use it to login to a computer running Chrome.

This would hardly be the first remote desktop app for Android. Splashtop, LogMeIn, and TeamViewer all offer the ability to login to a PC from your phone, and there are a number of VNC apps as well.

But an official Chromoting app could make it easy to login to your PC or Chromebook with minimal fuss. It’s also possible that you might be able to do things the other way around, and control your phone or tablet from a web browser on your PC.

Work on the Chromoting app for Android just started this week, so it could be a while before we know just how powerful this tool will become.
