Acer may be the first company to unveil a Windows 8 tablet with a screen smaller than 10 inches. But the 8 inch Acer Iconia W3 won’t be alone for long.

Taiwanese manufacturer Inventec is showing off a new 7 inch tablet design, and the folks at Mobile Geeks got a chance to spend a few minutes with the Inventec Lyon tablet.

Inventec Lyon

Inventec doesn’t sell products under its own brand name, but instead manufactures devices that are sold by companies that have big names in the West. So you probably won’t be able to walk into a store and buy an Inventec Lyon anytime soon.

But the company will be shopping the design around, looking for PC vendors interested in slapping their name on the little tablet.

According to Mobile Geeks, the tablet has an Intel Atom Bay Trail processor, a 7 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel IPS display, and Windows 8 software. By the time it ships, it’ll run Windows 8.1.

The prototype has 2GB of RAM and a 64GB solid state disk, although a 128GB model is also in the works.

The tablet front and rear cameras, a microSD card slot, micro USB, and micro HDMI ports and a headset jack.

Text and graphics look a little small on a Windows tablet that small — especially if you run desktop-style apps. But Windows 8 apps designed to run in full-screen mode should work pretty well.

  1. What devices have been rebranded Inventec products? Wondering what kind of quality they have.

Also, this would definitely benefit from having a mouse in the bezel.

  2. I’m curious as to the rated battery life and the subsequent actual battery life of this item.

    1. Hard to say but small size means it gets a smaller battery than typical 10″ tablets…

Tablets like the iPad go up to 42WHr, with most 10″ Android and Windows tablets getting around 30WHr batteries…

In comparisons, 7″ tablets like the Nexus 7 only get about 16WHr… Though, the closer they keep weight range to 500g, then the more likely it will include a larger than normal battery for the size tablet…

Batteries are pretty much the densest components in a tablet and for many models it can account for most of the mass of the tablet!

Problem though is people expect lighter for a smaller tablet… and it does tend to raise the pricing if they have to squeeze in a larger capacity battery… So there’s a balance they have to reach…

Meaning, overall, don’t expect as much battery life as the larger tablets get but the smaller size also means you won’t be using it as heavily and that it’s easier to get accessories like external battery packs to compensate…

  3. It really looks like the Acer Iconia W3 doesn’t it! I would personally prefer an 8.1″ display because its small enough to carry but big enough to use for day to day pc tasks/apps. Only good thing ’bout this is the baytrail cpu and 128GB model

    1. I am sure, ACER will release another tablet when the Bay trail cpu’s are available.
