Mozilla has said that the first smartphones to ship with Firefox OS will be low-cost handsets aimed at customers in developing markets. And the first Firefox OS developer phones seem to fit that description, with specs (and prices) that are probably best described as low-to-mid range.

But that doesn’t mean Firefox OS won’t play well on more expensive hardware. Mozilla VP Li Gong tells ComputerWorld that Sony is working on a high-end Firefox OS phone.

Firefox OS

While you don’t need high-end hardware to run Firefox OS, I don’t think a high resolution display, fast processor, or premium build quality would hurt.

Mozilla’s mobile operating system is designed to be an open source platform that phone makers and wireless carriers can adopt on a wide range of hardware. The OS runs third party apps that are basically web apps written using HTML5 and other web technologies.

It’s not clear how much of that will matter to customers — but Mozilla is hoping the open source, customizable environment should certainly appeal to carriers and device makers.

  1. Why “high-end” on an OS designed for Low-end hardware? Why not just a mid-range device? I guess Sony has a hard time
