Sony is adding another device to its AOSP program. The company already offers Android Open Source Project code for a few of its latest smartphones. Now you can also get software based on Google’s Android source code for the Sony Xperia Tablet Z.

That makes it the first tablet which Sony is opening up to developers in this way. As with Sony’s Xperia S and Xperia Z phones, not everything will work out of the box, and it’s missing some apps that come with the stock software. This software is aimed at developers, not casual users.

Update: But if you do want a custom ROM based on AOSP code for the Sony Xperia Tablet Z, there’s CyanogenMod 10.1.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z with AOSP

Sony is making the source code available through GitHub. You can’t simply flash the software like a ROM though. You’ll need to build the software from source using AOSP code and Sony’s binaries.

You’ll also need to unlock the bootloader on your tablet — which will void your warranty.

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z features a 10.1 inch, 1920 x 1200 pixel display, a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor, and 16GB to 32GB of storage. It measures 0.24 inches thick and weighs 1.1 pounds, and has a water and dust-resistant case.

It’s expected to go on sale in the US next week for $500 and up.
