Notion Ink is back with a new Android tablet. And just like the original Notion Ink Adam tablet, the new Adam II is designed with a little outside-the-box thinking.
The relatively small Indian company made headlines a few years ago by introducing one of the first tablets with an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core CPU, and one of the only tablets to ship with a Pixel Qi sunlight readable display.
The new model is cheaper, more powerful, and has a secondary black and white display on one side which you can use to read incoming notifications without turning on the color LCD screen.
Notion Ink introduced the new tablet this weekend, and Engadget has a few photos of the brochure.
Here are the basics:
- 10.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel IPS display
- Secondary STN (black and white LCD display) for notifications
- 1.5 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 dual-core CPU
- Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
- 1GB RAM
- 10 hours battery life (6000mAh battery)
- 2MP cameras on the front and back
- 802.11b/g/n WiFi
- Bluetooth
- HDMI output
The Adam II is expected to sell for about $220, which puts it squarely in the budget tablet camp. But that secondary display is a feature I haven’t seen on any other tablet, cheap or expensive.
Update: Engadget reports that the $220 price tag is incorrect, but actual pricing hasn’t yet been announced.
It’s not clear when the Adam II will go on sale, or where it will be available. Notion Ink sold the original Adam tablet internationally, but had trouble keeping up with demand… despite relatively lukewarm reviews for the company’s first tablet.
The official specs are arriving just a few days after we first heard that the new Adam tablet would feature some sort of dual-screen design, although the second display isn’t exactly what I had been expecting.
I have adam 1 And i am not at all happy with it. They all of a sudden left all the customers in a lurch and never contacted any one. My tablet still has the power on problem.
Please do not buy
Just as a heads up, the price was updated to be incorrect on engadget. They’re waiting to hear back but if NI’s past is anything to go by it’ll be a lot higher.
Thanks!
3G for 12k. Its already a winner in Indian market.
when and where it will be possible to buy ?
Why bend your neck for small grey notifications when they are on your lockscreen or notification tray?
to improve battery life 😀
I can’t really see it improving battery life by much. A small LED indicator would have been better and more noticeable from a distance.
As it stands you’d have to pick up the tablet, hold it up at an angle to look at the side just to see if there are any notifications(that is assuming you have an external light source to light up the e-ink display). That sounds like a lot of work to save 30 minutes max on battery life.
It’s actually a monochrome LCD display, not E Ink.
