The folks at iFixit may run a community with information on fixing broken gadgets, but you can’t fix it if it ain’t broke — and they’ve made a name for themselves by breaking down the latest gear to see what makes it tick… and whether it’s possible to put it back together again.

Ouya’s $99 video game console is the latest victim/patient.

Ouya teardown

Here are some of the day’s top tech news stories from around the web.

  • Ouya $99 game console tear-down: It’s just about as easy to repair, tweak as promised
The Ouya is a $99 video game console with an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor and Android-based software. It’s designed to be a developer-friendly device that lowers the barrier for creating games that you play on your TV. And it’s also designed to be hacker friendly, both in terms of hardware and software. Apparently it’s also pretty easy to fix if anything breaks. [iFixit]
  • CyanogenMod 10.1 nears a stable release
CyanogenMod 10.1 is a custom ROM based on the stock Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles you’ll find with some ROMs such as AOKP or Paranoid Android, but CyanogenMod is known for stability — and version 10.1 is finally nearing a stable release. A release candidate is now available for many devices. [CyanogenMod]
  • Marvel Unlimited now available for Android
Marvel Comics offers an “unlimited” service where you can get access to about 13,000 back-catalog digital issues for a monthly or annual fee. Up until recently you needed an iOS device or a PC with a supported web browser — but now you can use an Android tablet. The user experience isn’t terrific, but the $10/month or $60/year price ain’t bad. [Google Play]
  • Apex Launcher for Andorid hits v2.0, adds folders to app draw, more
One of the most popular Android app launchers (among a certain geeky set, anyway), now supports notification badge styles, folders in the app drawer, a re-organized settings menu, and more. Some options are only available in the Pro version. [Google Play]
  • Microsoft Office Web Apps to let you edit docs from Android tablets
Right now you can visit Microsoft’s Web Apps in an Android browser to view documents. Soon you’ll be able to edit them in the Chrome browser on Android as well. [Office 365]
  • Rumor: LG may release a tablet this year
LG makes TVs, phones, and washing machines, among other things. Up next may be a new tablet… it wouldn’t be the company’s first. But it’ll be… new? This rumor comes without a hint of the tablet’s specifications, or even operating system. [Unwired View]

One reply on “Lilbits (5-08-2013): Ouya game console tear-down, Marvel Unlimited comes to Android”

  1. Haven’t heard a peep from Ouya about my preorder.
I wonder if I’ll get one by June at this point?

    I wonder if I’ll care?
