Hisense is launching two new budget Android tablets in the US. The company hasn’t officially announced either model yet, but they’re both apparently available a bit early at some Walmart locations.

Following yesterday’s report that the tablets would ship for $99 and up, Liliputing reader Adam and blogger VelcoElectro have both confirmed that they’ve purchased models at Walmart locations.

HiSense 7 Sero Lite at Walmart

As expected, it looks like the Hisense Sero 7 Pro is a $149 tablet with an NVIDIA Tegra quad-core processor, a 7 inch, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean software.

Here are the full specs:

  • 7 inch, 1280 x 800 IPS display
  • 1.3 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 8GB of storage
  • MicroSD card slot, mini HDMI output, 3.5mm headset jack
  • 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, NFC
  • Stereo speakers
  • 5.0MP rear camera with flash and auto-focus
  • 2MP front-facing camera
  • 4000mAh battery
  • 7.9″ x 5″ x 0.43″

The $149 price tag seems pretty reasonable considering this tablet has the specs of a $199  Google Nexus 7 with half the storage, but with removable storage, HDMI output, and a few other bonus features.

But if you’d rather spend a little less, the $99 Hisense Sero 7 Lite is a tablet with the same screen size, but somewhat less impressive specs, including:

  • 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display
  • 1.6 GHz dual core processor (sounds like a Rockchip RK3066 to me)
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 4GB of storage
  • microSD card, mini HDMI port, 3.5mm headset jack
  • 0.3MP front-facing camera
  • 802.11b/g/n WiFi
  • 3400mAh battery
  • 7.9″ x 4.8″ x 0.41″
  • 11.6 ounces

In other words, if the Sero 7 Pro is sort of like a cheaper Google Nexus 7, the Sero 7 Lite is a cheaper HP Slate 7.

Both tablets featured the Vudu logo on the box, suggesting they’ll come with the Android app for the online video service preloaded. They’re also Google certified devices, which means they come with the Google Play Store and other apps including YouTube and Gmail.

If you use the Walmart Android app‘s barcode scanner to scan the product codes on these boxes you’ll see confirmation that the store charges $99 for the Hisense Sero 7 Lite and $149 for the Pro model. Unfortunately, as of May 21st, the app doesn’t seem to think the tablets are in stock at any stores.

  1. I have found the user facing camera to have a dark region. This is not resulting from any visible smudge or speck near the camera. Also, the same camera seems to not do well in a modestly lighted room. The look, feel / build of the tablet is good. There are some delays and crashes in gmail. There are annoying delays just typing / editing this message. I say that for $149 it is worthwhile if the cameras are OK.

  2. I just purchased the Pro model, and it performs better than a Nexus 7. Really impressed with it. It had a rubber back which is such a plus for me.

  3. The cost for them at Sterling va were much less, pro was 100, the other was like 69. Nice for steaming of slingbox while on the road. It works well. It is bigger than a Nexus 7 and will not fit into a non flexible Kindle case. It feels just like a Nexus 7 with a camera and a flash-lite. Play and Amazon app works fine. Have had good battery life so far, but have not pushed it. I have it in an old flexible blackberry case I picked up at staples for $9 discount bin. I put in some memory, but have not done anything with it yet.

  4. Hi, did anybody noticed that this tablet comes with vudu and the wallmart app pre installed ? Meaning that is a deal between WALMART and hisense and this tablet only will be for sale at WALMART. And believe or not i work for Walmart and they are making no more than $6 on profit on this tablet.

  5. Hi’ i work for walmart in the electronics department in miami florida. I was waiting to buy a fair table at a good price and was about to get the galaxy tab 7 for $179, but when i saw the hisense for $149 and couple more of covenient features like. NFC’ LED flash and quad core did not think about it twice even we got a large shipment, i bought it the same day. This is the perfect tablet for the right price. I have not complain at all. It has better screen resolution than the galaxy tab and the sound is fantastic. The 5 mp camera is good to take outdoor pictures. I already have a hisense tv and know they are of good quality also the table. I recommend.

  6. I’ve had the Sero 7 Pro for a couple of days now and one feature that I’m looking for, the Multiple Users feature of tablets running Jelly Bean, seems to be missing from the menu. How about for everyone else? It’s supposed to be under Settings -> Device -> Users, but I don’t have that option…

    1. That feature was added to Android 4.2.2 which isn’t currently running on the Sero 7

  7. Could someone share exactly which Walmart they bought it at? I went the Shakopee, MN Super Walmart and they don’t have it yet. Also just checked Amazon.com but they don’t have any.

    1. You might wish to go to the other thread on this and look for Adam, he bought one and could answer this question for you. In fact, I’d like to know this too…update: beat you to it, I’ll post back an answer if/when he replies.

      1. Hello, I have also purchased the pro. It comes with pretty much stock android with play store except for a few apps such as walmart, sams club, kingsoft office, pandora, and vudu. The only app that cannot be uninstalled is vudu. Other than that it is stock 4.2.1. There is about 5.5 gigs left for apps. You are not able to install apps to SD unfortunately. I have also tried hdmi mirroring and it works but mirrors with black bars on the sides to keep the same aspect ratio. This tablet also has vibration and the camera isn’t too bad.

        1. Also, there is a setting that allows you to choose performance levels (High, Med, Low) that supposedly underclocks the cpu to save battery.

          1. What is the warranty on this? I purchased the Nexus 7 in December and have already had to send it in for repairs once (it stopped charging). I’m eying this tablet for my 11-yr-old son.

          2. We’ll probably get the Kindle Fire HD, since our Kindle Fire has been excellent (as has our Nook tablet).

        2. Thank you for posting your information. I appreciate the updated info. I am a PlayBook user and am not a happy camper with all the wishy washy talk about my tablet getting updated to BB 10 or not. As it is right now, the platform is dead and though the tablet is useful still, to not get a decent web browser or future apps has me wanting to try Android. This seems like a decent tablet for the money but the only concern I have is the 8GB Internal storage as you mentioned. Too bad they didn’t offer a 16 or 32 GB for some extra cash…

          1. Overall, if 8GB is enough for apps I would actually recommend this over the Nexus 7 even. My gf has the nexus so I am able to compare. The nexus is slightly slimmer because of it’s curved backing and will obviously receive more prompt updates but for me the extras this tab has (more media storage, camera, hdmi) plus the 50 dollar price difference put it above the nexus in my opinion.

          2. Went and picked one up this afternoon, too. Overall I’m pretty darn happy with it and it is a major update over my A100 in terms of speed, screen quality, form factor, build quality and weight.

I’ve handled cheap android tabs before and this isn’t one. It was well designed and thought out. I’m pretty impressed with it for $150.

Like has been said, no root (yet) so no copying apps and app data to the SD card. I can live with 8GB until the root.

          3. A few other things:

            1) The listed resolution on the screen is legit. It also has a nice viewing angle and is pretty bright.

            2) The packaging was well done for a bargain-brand. Simple and clean.

            3) The warranty is one year (I think that there was a question about that somewhere).

          4. I guess you are one of the lucky ones – I bought two for my kids last night. Five minutes after starting one up, a loud cracking sound popped and the tablet went dead. Wouldn’t turn on any possible way after that. The second tablet has a bad blurred back camera and the memory card slot doesn’t work and the operating system is buggy and keeps shutting down. I’ve reset to factory settings twice. Needless to say, I’m taking them back.

          5. Ashley:
Did you get pros or basic ones?

Nearly 24 hours later everything is still smooth for me – camera, sd slot, etc. I’ve been using it all day for browsing, spotify, podcasts, etc.

          6. See my comment above about the unit shutting down. Also, did you fully charge the unit before using it?

          7. The two cameras will be nice (I have the Nexus 7 and wish it had both).

        3. Hi, I would like to verify if you can or cannot install apps to the SD card. I have a pretty much stock android (rooted Nook) and you can download apps such as ZDBox which will allow you to move any apps from the internal storage to the SD card. My internal storage for apps in only about 2 GB’s, but I can move any or all to the SD card storage if I need to. Other wise all the SD card would be good for is copying movies or books or photos from your PC to the tablet. If someone who has purchased the Sero 7 can verify if that method works. Also in the standard Android settings, Applications, they should be a option to allow moving apps to any external storage.

          1. I have tried using App2SD with no success. It simply does not allow moving apps to the SD card. The option to move apps to SD is also unavailable in the android settings. This may change once rooted or devs get their hands on this.

          2. Can you try ZDBox tool kit? It appears to only need root if you are tying to Task Kill and stop background service completely. It doesn’t ask for Root to move apps to SD. My nook is rooted, I guess, as I am running Cyanogenmod 7. I’ve seen reviews of other apps such as APP2SD, and alot of complaints that it doesn’t work. I do not wish to root any new tablet, and 8Gb’s is just not enough storage.

          3. Tried. ZDBox just tells me that the present system does not support software to SD.

          4. That’s too bad, I wasn’t planning on rooting this tablet if I bought it. I guess I will go for the Nexus 7 16GB after all.
            thanks for the valuable info.

    2. Here is what Adam said: “Google Play Store installed. I’m NOT an android techie, but the only
apps I immediately identified as not just plain ol’ Jelly Bean Android
are Walmart, Sams Club, and Kingsoft Office. Maybe a couple others that
I deleted and can’t recall (but it did let me delete them).”

        1. HiSense – I thought that name sounded familar. I bought two of their HDTVs last year. Thought it was a nice deal until three months later one broke down and so I contacted the company and they refused to cover warranty. Ultimately said failure was caused by a power surge, despite me having a protector. The second TV’s image started going bad right after the one year mark. If this is any indicator of quality, I’d avoid buying any of their electronics.

    1. I bought two of the $149 Hisense Sero 7 Pro yesterday and both had problems – I don’t think this tablet is ready for mass production – both had faulty cameras and the operating system keeping shutting down – did a factory reset several times – still same problems. On one of them, the SD card didn’t work – tried 2 different card brands. – I guess you get what you pay for — took them back. I just read more on HiSense TV’s which have been around for a while and they’re notoriously bad for breaking down… I’d go with another brand of tablet, not worth it.

      1. lol, here comes the troll, but you forgot the basic rules of trolling, that is, register an account in advance, post on some other topics for a while, then come out in full force and troll on the specific brands/stores/products you hate for no reasons or whatever reasons you have.

      2. The tablet is set to shut off with 2 minutes of inactivity. You can change the interval in settings. I have one also and don’t have these problems. I think a lot of people making complaints have no technical knowledge.
