Nokia used to be the world’s top phone maker. But in recent years Apple and Samsung have dominated the smartphone space. Now it looks like Nokia may be planning to fight back by taking a few pages from Samsung’s playbook.

The Financial Times reports that Nokia plans to launch a number of high-end phones this year (as opposed to companies like Apple, which tend to launch just a single flagship phone each year).

Nokia may also be planning to launch a phone with a very large display, something that some folks like to call a “phablet.”

It’d would reportedly be similar in size to Samsung’s Galaxy Note smartphones, which feature screens as large as 5.5 inches, blurring the lines between phones and tablets.

While Samsung’s phones ship with Google Android, Nokia has partnered with Microsoft to include Windows Phone software on its handsets. Microsoft insists that Windows Phone is only for phones, while Windows RT and Windows 8 are for larger devices such as tablets, notebooks and hybrids. But if Nokia launches a 5.5 inch phone, that could appeal to anyone that’s been itching for a Windows Phone tablet… maybe.

Right now the largest Nokia phone running Windows Phone 8 is the Lumia 920, which has a 4.5 inch screen.

  1. The photo is captioned ‘Nokia Lumia 820 and 920’, but one of the phones clearly has a HTC logo on the front.

  2. But, is MS working on supporting various resolution in WinPhone 8 ? I seem to remember they don’t support “any” resolution à la Android: programs have to be hard-coded for a specific rez. And right now WinPhone supports only 2 low rez ?
