There aren’t a lot of Android tablets with 13 inch screens. There’s the Archos FamilyPad, and then there’s the Toshiba Excite 13. Neither is widely available in the US, and neither is particularly cheap. The best price I could find was at B&H, which is taking pre-orders for the FamilyPad 2 for $320.

But now there’s a new 13.3 inch tablet on the market: The Kocaso GX1400. It’s available from the ebestshop4u store on eBay for $300.

Kocaso GX1400

Kocaso is a budget tablet maker known for making some of the cheapest Android tablets that flood eBay, Amazon, and other marketplaces. I’ve never tested one, and can’t really comment  on their quality or performance.

But on paper the Kocaso GX1400 doesn’t look too bad… if you think that a 13.3 inch Android tablet is a good idea.

The GX1400 features a Rockchip RK3066 ARM Cortex-A9 dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage. It runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and has a 10,000mAh battery which is good for up to 5 hours of run time.

That might not sound like a lot of battery life for an Android tablet… and it’s not. But that 13 inch display is going to use a little more power than your typical tablet display.

Kocaso’s tablet features a 3MP rear camera and 0.3Mp front-facing camera, 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1, a mini HDMI output, and a micro SD card slot. It has a 1280 x 800 pixel display.

In case the screen size didn’t give it away, this tablet isn’t exactly svelte. It measures 13″ x 9″ a 0.5″ and weighs 2.9 pounds. That makes it heavier than some 13 inch notebooks, even though there’s no keyboard.

If you plan to use a large tablet around the house to watch videos, read recipes, or play games, the extra weight might not matter much. But if you’re looking for something for use on the go, there are plenty of 10 inch tablets that weigh half as much, or 7 inch models that are even lighter.

  1. >>>if you think that a 13.3 inch Android tablet is a good idea.

It might be good for Google Books PDFs of old 19th & 20th century magazines, which often feature small type requiring pinch-zoom on a 9.7-10.1″ display. One day I will get to test one of these for that, I hope.

  2. Plus keep in mind that it isn’t IMPOSSIBLE to get the Toshiba Excite 13, and at least it sports a quad core CPU and is of known build quality, although I haven’t looked at where prices have settled. (And you can totally game on it using BT controllers)

-and 5 hours run time on a 13 inch tablet with room for a very large battery? Man, they really cheaped out on that thing.

  3. I have a FamilyPad 1. It’s very slow, but OK for basic stuff: email, RSS, web, SD videos… The newcomer should go 4x faster, so not an issue.

My best use for it is as an extra screen for a PC. Put it down at your desk, set it up with large widgets that refresh often, and you get a real-time window unto the ‘net.

I’ll be trying to game on it with the nephews this summer, but the low performance severely limits what games are fun on it.

As a media device, which is what I intended it for, it mostly fails. It’s very unwieldy, and the narrow TN viewing angles means the only 2 positions that work are either sitting at a table, or propped up on my knees. Is was planning to use it in bed, in the kitchen… I’m never well-placed to see the screen. I’m guessing that other cheap 13.3″ is TN too, so buyer beware.

Once in the right position, it’s a lot more comfortable to use than my 10″ though.

    1. The GX1400 specs show an IPS screen. If the RK3066 performs as well as the several devices I own with this chip I can see why it caught Brad’s attention. This thing looks remarkably similar to the FamilyPad 2….
