Asus is rolling out a software update for its cheapest 10 inch tablet, bringing Android 4.2 Jelly Bean to the MeMO Pad Smart ME301T.

The tablet features a 10.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display, a 1.2 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage. The $299 tablet is sort of like a Nexus 7 with a larger display, and I was pretty impressed with the review unit Asus loaned me last month.

While the move from Android 4.1 to Android 4.2 shouldn’t change performance too much, there are some improvements packed into the update.

Among other things, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean adds support for multiple user accounts on the same tablet, improved text prediction, and the new Android 4.2 keyboard which supports gesture-based typing.

Asus typically includes its own keyboard on Android tablets, but you can go into the Android language & input options and change your default keyboard if you’d prefer to use Google’s standard keyboard.

The update should also bring support for widgets on the lock screen.

The new firmware should roll out to MeMO Pad Smart users in the coming days and weeks, but you can also download it directly from the Asus support site.
