Don’t like the software that came with your Android phone or tablet? There are plenty of custom ROMs available for many devices, letting you install a tweaked version of Android.
Android Open Kang Project is one of the most popular, and the team behind AOKP have just released Milestone 1 of JB-MR1. In something closer to plain English, that means there’s now a relatively stable build of the team’s first ROM based on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
AOKP has made a name for itself by offering something that looks a bit like the stock version of Android you’d see on a Google Nexus device, but then offering users a ton of customization options.
Among other things, AOKP lets you customize the lock screen, boot logo, clock style, power menu, hide the statusbar, and switch between phone and tablet user interfaces.
With the Milestone 1 release, the AOKP team has announced they’re moving to a new release system. While working on JB-MR1, the team released 6 “Builds.”
Moving forward, there will be an automatic build cranked out every 4 days. Those builds will incorporate all the latest code from the developers… even if it hasn’t been fully tested. So what you’ll get every 4 days will be something similar to a “nightly” release that you’d get from another ROM, such as CyanogenMod.
In other words, make sure to backup your device before installing any of these nightlies… they’re not guaranteed to work.
But they will let fans of AOKP install new updates on a much more regular basis while waiting for the next stable Milestone.
AOKP JB-MR1 Milestone 1 is already available for a number of devices including most Nexus phones and tablets. You can check for the latest version for your device at the AOKP Supported Devices page.
You’ll need to install Google Apps separately if you want the Play Store, Gmail app, Google Maps, and other Google software. You can download the 20130301 build from goo.im.
