Amazon is cutting the price of its 8.9 inch tablets. Starting today you can pick up a Kindle Fire HD 8.9 for $269, which is $30 cheaper than the tablet cost yesterday.

The Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 4G is getting an even bigger price drop: It goes from $499 to $399.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9

The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 features a 1920 x 1200 pixel display, a T OMAP 4470 dual-core processor, and PowerVR SGX 544 graphics. Even at $299 and up, it was already one of the most powerful tablets in its price range.

Now that the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 starts at $269, it’s the same price as the Barnes & Noble NOOK HD+ which has similar specs, but which comes with the Barnes & Noble NOOK store for books and apps. The Kindle tablets, obviously, ship with Amazon’s digital content stores for music, books, movies, and apps.

What they don’t include is access to the Google Play Store, which has hundreds of thousands of free and paid apps, many of which aren’t available from Amazon’s app store. If you really want to turn the Kindle Fire HD into a full-fledged Android tablet though, there’s a hack for that.

For $269 you can now pick up a Kindle HD 8.9 with 16GB of storage and advertisements on the home screen and lock screen. Or you can pay extra to remove the ads or upgrade to 32GB of storage.

The $399 Kindle Fire HD 4G has 32GB of storage and built-in 4G LTE wireless capabilities.

Amazon also announced that the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is now available in Europe and Japan.
