The LG Optimus G is basically what you get if you take the Google Nexus 4 and release it with LG branding and square corners instead of round edges. LG makes both phones, and the specs are pretty much the same (although LG puts its own skin on Android, while Google offers the phone with a stock version of Android 4.2).

Now LG is preparing to launch an updated Optimus G which takes pretty much everything that’s good about the original and then amplifies it a bit.

Update: Japanese carrier NTT Docomo will start selling the LG Optimus G in April.

LG Optimus G Pro

Engadget and Blog of Mobile received some leak documents pointing to a new LG smartphone featuring:

  • 5 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display
  • 1.7 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 quad-core processor
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 32GB of storage
  • 13MP rear camera
  • 2.4MP front camera
  • 3000mAh battery
  • 802.11n WiFI
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • 4G LTE

In other words, the Optimus G Pro has a bigger, higher resolution screen than the original, a faster processor, a bigger battery, and higher resolution cameras.

Unlike the Nexus 4 (but like the original Optimus G), the phone also supports 4G LTE networks.

In Japan the phone will also be available with digital TV capabilities — but that’s not uncommon for top-tier smartphones in that market.

  1. Great hardware! But unless the software is stock Android, it doesn’t mean a thing.

  2. oH GOSH more option, Xperia Z or Optima G Pro? How was is Xperia Z again? The battery of 3k is tempting though….

  3. If it has its own skin, that may imply something about the frequency or lag in getting Android updates. (As an owner of a Verizon Galaxy Nexus 3, I am sensitive to long waits for Android updates.)
