Intel plans to launch its next-generation of Atom chips for tablets later this year. Code-name Bay trail, the new 22nm chips are quad-core processor that should offer a significant performance boost over the Clover Trail chips that are already available.

The chip maker says the first tablets featuring Bay Trail chips should be ready to ship by the 2013 holiday season.

Intel says Bay Trail chips will offer twice the performance of a Clover Trail chip, while also offering improved security features. You’ll also see all-day battery life and thin tabelts measuring as thin as 0.3 inches.

While we’re waiting for Bay Trail, Intel is also introducing a Clover Trail+ chip called the Atom Z2580 which  is a dual core chip that offers up to twice the performance of an Intel Medfield chip (although the company isn’t saying much about how it compares to the original Clover Trail chip).

  1. This is INTEL playing catch-up…the ATOM has been more or less an expensive( compared to ARM chips ) piece of crap and will remain so until early 2014 when this new platform arrives. This is AMD’s chance with the new jaguar core on the KABINI platform to shine & to make some money so they can survive…As for ARM they need to get true 64 bit chips out in 2014 as INTEL takes no prisoners!

    1. Some in ARM are pushing for sometime near the end of 2014 to start getting 64bit products out but it’ll be more likely in 2015. For now most that are appearing are only for the server market.

For AMD, they’re still behind the curve on power efficiency! Tamesh will be their first Tablet specific SoC but will likely still consume more power than Intel solutions.

While Intel is planning to start releasing products by the 2013 holiday shopping season… 2014 is when they’ll finish rolling them out, mainly the replacement for Medfield, Merrifield, is expected in 2014 but we should see other options available before then.

Also, while Intel is playing catch up… They pretty much are already mostly caught up in terms of pricing and power efficiency with ARM. The difference between a Clover Trail and ARM Windows 8/RT tablet is negligible for pricing and run time and will become even less so with the 22nm update.

Meanwhile, Intel can push full 64bit support and up to 8GB of RAM with the 22nm update. Along with over 50% performance improvement, which is greater than what’s promised for AMD Tamesh and Hondo already has less CPU performance than Clover Trail.

Though, AMD will still hold a clear lead in graphical performance. The 22nm update promises about 3x improvement over Clover Trail but that just about evens them out with AMD’s present offerings like Hondo. So any improvement to Tamesh will maintain the lead there…
