As expected, Huawei is bringing a new smartphone to market that’s designed to make the Samsung Galaxy Note look dinky. The Huawei Ascend Mate features a 6.1 inch, 1280 x 720 pixel display.

One of the benefits of a huge smartphone display is that it also leaves room for a massive battery — the Ascend Mate has a 4050mAh battery, something you’d usually find in a tablet, not a phone.

Under the hood, the phone is powered by a 1.5 GHz Hi-Silicon quad-core processor, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage.

The phone has an 8MP camera on the back and a front-facing 1MP camera, and the whole thing measures 6.5″ x 3.4″ x 0.4″ and weighs 7 ounces.

The Ascend Mate should be available in China in February.

Just like Samsung sells the Galaxy Note II, but markets the Galaxy S III as its flagship device, Huawei isn’t pushing the Ascend Mate as its primary smartphone. The company’s latest flagship phone is the Ascend D2, with a 5 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display, the same quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage.

  1. Yeah, I like the size, but other than that, I wouldn’t risk it. For one, a 1 MP rear facing camera is insane. We use our phones for cameras now. 8 MP or forget it. Also, personally, never have liked a cellphone, even though I’ve sold them for 20 years, till I got my Galaxy SII. I’m likely more happy with the Android OS than the hardware, but still, in 20 years I’m finally happy.

  2. No thanks to cheap Chinese junk from a company with ties to the Chimese military and terrorist associations.

    1. Except for the rear camera, doesn’t the nexus 7 have similar specs?
