Corning Gorilla Glass is a sturdy glass material which has proven popular with smartphone and tablet makers because it’s tougher to shatter or scratch than traditional glass. Now Corning is getting ready to launch the third generation of Gorilla Glass, which is even tougher to break.

Corning Gorilla Glass 3

Gorilla Glass 3 will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas, and if previous Corning displays are anything to go by, I suspect the company will be putting glass panels through some heavy duty stress tests for the amusement of journalists.

The company says Gorilla Glass 3 is 3 times more scratch resistant than its predecessors, and if you do manage to scratch the surface of your phone or tablet, the scratches will be 40 percent less visible thanks to the way the glass is formulated.

Update: Corning is demonstrating just how tough its new glass is by slamming it with a 130 gram metal ball and performing other torture tests, as shown in the videos below.

  1. blah, blah, blah… So what is even more resistant, while it’s able to crack up when phone falls on the floor?

  2. That’s pretty amazing sounding. I wonder if this will eliminate the need for screen protectors? Probably not. I am sure that no matter how scratch resistant it is there will be someone who scratches their screen as soon as they take the device out of the box.

  3. will it be able to play Donkey Kong Country on Android? I miss the days where I knock on the glass tv screen to imitate the sound of the steel keg while playing it on the SNES. 🙂
