Puppy Linux is a light-weight Linux-based operating system designed to run well even on older computers with slow processors, little memory, or small hard drives. In fact, the operating system is designed to run from a USB flash drive, so you can carry your desktop in your pocket and fire it up just by plugging it into a PC and booting up.

While Puppy has been around for years, a new version hit the streets in 2012 called Precise Puppy. It’s based on Ubuntu 12.04 which means that pretty much any app that can run on Ubuntu can run on Puppy. All you have to do is download and install the .deb package.

Precise Puppy

That means it should be much easier to find software that can run on Precise Puppy than some earlier versions of the operating system, since Ubuntu is one of the most popular Linux distributions around. Many of those apps are also available from a built-in package manager.

While software compatibility is improved, you still get some of the advantages of Puppy including small size, a light-weight desktop environment, and support for older and slower hardware.

The latest version of Ubuntu is a 750MB download, Precise Puppy 5.4.3 is just 166MB.

There’s also a version of Puppy 5.4.3 based on Slackware. It’s called “Slacko Puppy,” and it’s also about 160MB.

Both versions are available for download from the Puppy website.

  1. I get weird mouse errors when testing it in Virtualbox on a Windows host.

  2. is there a version of this for tablets to run vs running android or ios or….8 ?

  3. Good news. I’ve used previous versions of Puppy and like it a lot. It’s my favorite of all the light weight Linux distros.

  4. I use Puppy with m350 itx boxes (Atom and Sandy Bridge CPUs) attached to 19″ monitors. Silent, <20W (incl. monitor,) and fast because Puppy loads everything into RAM at start up. Puppy and SLAX are the leading edge of Linux on x86 for users who want simplicity and convenvience. Now Barry and the experts working with him are porting Puppy to the new ARM HDMI PCs. It should be a nice alternative to Android for using an HDTV as a PC.

    1. Hopefully they work with AndrewDB I could really use this with my MK809 that is coming…
