Archos has unveiled a new Android tablet with a 9.7 inch, 2048 x 1536 pixel display — which make it about the same size and resolution as Apple’s iPad with Retina display. Under the hood the Archos tablet is very different from Apple’s, though.

Archos 97 Titanium HD

The Archos 97 Titanium HD features a 1.6 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 dual core processor, ARM Mali 400 graphics, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of built-in storage, plus a microSD card slot for extra storage.

It runs Google Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software, features a 5MP rear camera with auto-focus and a front-facing 2MP camera. The tablet measures 9.4″ x 7.2″ x 0.35″ and weighs 1.4 pounds.

The specs sound awfully familiar, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Archos contracted with one of the Chinese shops that makes the Chuwi V99 or Cube U9GT5 tablets. Based on context clues, I suspect that, like those tablets, the Archos 97 Titanium HD is powered by a Rockchip RK3066 processor.

There’s no word on the launch date or price for the Archos 97 Titanium HD.

  1. “weighs 1.5 pounds”

According to specs you linked to it weighs 22.5 ounces which converts to 1.41 pounds.

  2. Expect the price to be about $250, About half the ipad4. This Rockchip RK3066 processor is kind of superior to the one in the iPad2.

    1. ipad2 gpu can beat rk3066’s mali in any given day. Besides, ipad2 is very smooth and compatible with so many appsand games.

      1. That’s just not true. The Mali-400 Quad-core GPU is at least equal in performance to the SGX543 dual-core GPU. It’s plainly fake to look at Apple-optimized benchmarks when you compare Android devices with iOS devices, that is just plain fake science. Android has MORE apps and games fully optimized today, the Mali-400 is the most popular GPU of the Android ecosystem, same as in Android market-leading Galaxy S3, thus you can be sure that tons and tons of games are perfectly well optimized for Mali-400 quad-core GPU already.

  3. Archos needs to include all codecs, vs making users pay for them in Archos store. Very tricky, but due to this game they play, I refuse to recommend their products.

    1. Are you living in 2009? Archos includes all codecs that Rockchip supports for free included on their rockchip powered devices.

      1. using archos 80 3g and to run various video (.mp4 they require AC3 plugin needed they send me to the store) and why not provide tablet including ogg vorbis they tell me i need codec and i click to download and end up at the archos store and need to buy the codec…

      2. maybe usa problem as just tried to install VLC and was blocked due to country? is archos blocking or google play? If so, and codecs are limited in US then archos is not providing in US , making you buy? my best guess.

      3. go to magnatunes dot c o m – lara st john test all codecs listed to play or download – m3u streams xspf, ogg, mp3, etc? this getting tablet and all codecs don’t work is a pain.

    2. I don’t recommend them simply because they seem to always bring pain to people buying them or people supporting them.
