The Mele A1000 set-top-box made headlines earlier this year when hackers figured out that you could install a range of Linux-based operating systems on what was originally designed as an Android-powered media player.

Since then we’ve seen dozens of similar devices such as the MK802, UG802, Diamond Multimedia AMP1000, and many more. But if you like the Mele A1000 form factor and just with the device had a little more storage or additional memory… now it does.

Mele A1000G

The manufacturer has updated the product line with the new Mele A1000G and Mele A2000G. Both devices feature the same Allwinner A10 ARM Cortex-A8 processor as their predecessors  but instead of 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage the new models feature 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage.

You also get USB, Ethernet, VGA, HDM, and RCA jacks, built-in 802.11b/g WiFi, and a wireless remote control.

For the most part the 1000 series and 2000 series devices feature the same specs. Only the box design is different.

DealExtreme sells the Mele A1000G for $107 and the A2000G for $106.

You can also find a number of sellers at AliExpress offering the A1000G and A2000G for around $100.

  1. I am waiting for the next generation. How about the Allwinner A20 processor?

  2. Sola : Freescale just cost much more than AllWinner A10 (~5$), with a not so speed CPU (single cortex A8, not bad at all anyway) and GPU (single Mali 400 core) but a powerfull VPU (that’s a video player), they will probably instead wait for next gen AllWinner A40 SoC that after Charbax infomartion will use 4 core Cortex A7 (really low consuming and still powerfull last gen ARM CPU), 8 core GPU (mali 6xx ?), but probably still for a low price :

  3. Nice to see these boxes got an upgrade. The old Mele specs were a bit dated.

Now, they should prepare a new generation as well with a similarly hackable design. The Freescale i.MX6 SOC would be just ideal for this.
