The Dell Latitude 6430u is a business-class ultrabook with 14 inch display, Intel Ivy Bridge processor, and a durable case design that’s just 0.8 inches thick and which weighs about 3.7 pounds. But the Latitude 6430u has another trick up its sleeve — it will be one of the first devices to offer WiGig capabilities.

WiGig is a new wireless protocol for transferring data at speeds as high as 7 gigabite per second. That’s about 10 times faster than the speediest 802.11n transfer rates available. The only catch is that WiGig works over much shorter distances.

So you probably won’t use a WiGig router to share your home or work internet connection the way you do with WiFi routers today. Instead you’ll be able to buy WiGig-enabled devices or docks for transferring audio, video, or other data over short distances using a blazing-fast connection.

Want to stream a 4K resolution video from your laptop to your TV? WiGig can handle that. It should also make backing up your device’s data to a shared network drive pretty speedy.

At launch the WiGig features in the Dell Latitude 6430u won’t be all that useful — since there aren’t many other WiGig capable devices for it to talk to. But that should change in the next year or two. A number of PC, chip, and consumer electronics companies are members of the Wireless Gigabit Alliance and we should start to see WiGig capable devices from more of them soon.
