There’s good news and bad news for Acer tablet owners hoping to see their devices updated to the latest version of Google’s Android software. The good news is that Acer will be offering Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates for three of its latest tablets.
The bad news is that the company’s first three tablets won’t be updated… at least not officially.
Acer tells Computer World that the company is preparing Android 4.1 updates for the following models:
- Acer Iconia Tab A210 10 inch tablet
- Acer Iconia Tab A510 10 inch tablet
- Acer Iconia Tab A700 10 inch, 1080p tablet
Each of these devices features an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor and currently runs Android 4.0 software. Acer will also release the Iconia Tab A110 7 inch tablet with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean pre-loaded soon.
Unfortunately Acer has no plans upgrade its older tablets with NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processors. The following models will be stuck with Android 4.0 indefinitely.
- Acer Iconia Tab A100 7 inch tablet
- Acer Iconia Tab A200 10 inch tablet
- Acer Iconia Tab A500 10 inch tablet
Of course, just because Acer isn’t offering software updates for these models doesn’t mean independent developers are happy sticking with Android 4.0. There are already unofficial builds of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for the Iconia Tab A100, and the Iconia Tab A200 and Iconia Tab A500.
You’ll just need to be willing to unlock your bootloader and potentially void your warranty to install those builds.
I guess the last 3rd paragraph is referring to Acer but not Asus.
