Facing tough competition in the mobile chip space from Qualcomm, NVIDIA, Samsung, Apple, and others, Texas Instruments has announced plans to shift its focus a bit.
While the company will continue to support existing tablets including the Amazon Kindle Fire line of tablets and the recently announced B&N NOOK HD tablets, Reuters reports that TI doesn’t want to put all its eggs in one basket.
Instead, the company will be focusing on more profitable markets such as chips for industrial products including automobiles.
That doesn’t mean TI is getting out of the smartphone and tablet space altogether. But as the company scales back its investment in the space, I wouldn’t be surprised to see big clients like Amazon and Barnes & Noble look elsewhere for chips for future devices.
