The MEEP tablet is an inexpensive Android tablet aimed at kids. It has a tough plastic case, a custom user interface, and an app store for downloading games and apps aimed at the younger set.

Oregon Scientific is offering the tablet for just $150, which would have been a pretty great price if the company was ready to sell the MEEP tablet when it was first announced in February. But these days you can pick up B&N NOOK, Amazon Kindle, and Google/Asus Nexus tablets for under $200, and you get a lot more bang for the buck with each of those devices.

MEEP Tablet

The MEEP tablet has a 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 single core processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, a 0.3MP camera, and a 7 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display. It measures 8.6″ x 5.5″ x 1″.

There is an SD card slot for extra storage, and there is an HDMI port which lets you stream video to an external display at resolutions up to 2160p. The tablet is also one of the few I’ve seen with separate audio jacks for a mic and headphone. In fact, Oregon Scientific will sell accessories including a mic, headphones, and even a keyboard, drum pads, and game controllers.

But the low resolution screen on the tablet is pretty disappointing.

I suppose if you kids have bad eyesight and don’t mind not having access to the full Google Play Store, you could find worse ways to spend $150.

  1. What do they mean not having full access to google play? I am looking into a more duable tablet but would want full access?

    1. I’m lost too… Meep does have an excellent interface with Google Play! But, you can’t initiate it from the Meep, it all goes through the parent portal so that parents control what is obtained from Google Play. You can literally put anything on the Meep from GP (including the regular non-filtered version of YouTube, Skype, etc), and run it basically like an adult tablet if you so choose. Or not, you can also run it with very strict controls. That’s the beauty of Meep, it’s your choice how much to install and how to control it.

  2. I bought my kids the Nabi tablet and we all love it. They can do everything I can do on my phone or tablet plus I can take certain, access away from them. It also has where u can download music, books, and any game on Android market.

  3. I’m curious to know how many other 7″ tablets have a microSD slot. The only recent one that springs to mind is the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. Both the Nexus and the new Fires lack physical expansion. Are there others out there that have it?

    1. 7″ tablets do seem to be disappearing quickly. Amazon and B&N must be doing pretty well.

The Archos 70 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 have MicroSD ports, but they’re a bit more expensive than the Fire. If you don’t mind 800×480 resolution, all Arnova tablets have MicroSD ports.
