The Gertboard is an expanding board for the $35 Raspberry Pi which lets the little computer interact with the world around it. While you can use the Pi to run a full desktop style operating system, making into a low-cost alternative to a traditional PC for educational institutions or hobbyists, the Gertboard lets you add sensors, motor controllers and much more.
It’s available for pre-order for $61 starting today.
The Gertboard isn’t an official Raspberry Pi product, but it comes from a developer closely associated with the project. It comes as a lot that requires some soldering, but if that’s enough to scare you off, I’m not sure why you were interested in the first place. The whole point of the Gertboard is that it lets you build things with the Raspberry Pi at the center.
For instance, you could design a robot, an automatic light controller or garage door opener, or a thermometer or thermostat.
The board comes with a user manual and assembly guide.
