Android gaming is finally maturing thanks to faster internals and a wee bit more excitement on the developer side. Gamers looking for the next great mobile platform on which to get their fix will want to check out the Wikipad gaming tablet.

wikipad

This 10.1-inch slate will ship with a removable controller that adds buttons, triggers and joysticks arranged similarly to Xbox 360 controllers (though the company clams the similarity isn’t purposeful). The controller adds some bulk to the tablet, but since it’s almost as this as an iPad and a hair lighter, this is not likely to be a problem. Plus, you get some nice grippy areas.

The Wikipad will sport a quad-core chip, of course. Specifically Nvidia’s 1.4-GHz Tegra 3 model. Surprisingly, it will only have 1GB of RAM; I would have assumed a gaming rig, even a tablet, would go with 2 gigs.

What’s a gaming tablet without a great screen? The 10.1 inch IPS display with 1280 x 800 resolution looks promising and will offer more screen real estate than the 7 inch version the company showed off earlier this year. No 3D display for now.

It will be interesting to see how this stacks up to the ASUS Transformer Infinity Pad. For one, the Infinity has a faster Tegra 3 chip. And that full HD display cloud make gaming an even more immersive experience. Still, the Infinity does not come with an awesome controller add-on.

There’s no release date for the Wikipad, but the company president said it “will release later this year,” which we can only hope is true. It would make a good holiday gift, for sure.

Hit GamesBeat for more details, including the full specs Wikipad was willing to reveal.

  1. 1gb is the most of any android tablet out there.. on par with the best.. kinda sad the author didn’t research this at all.. o well.. looks like a great tablet..

  2. Parent comment needs to be removed; it’s useless spam for an unrelated video game.
