Up until now if you’ve wanted a smartphone with a high definition screen you’ve had to pay a premium price to get one. The iPhone 4S, HTC One X, and Samsung Galaxy S III tend to cost around $200 or more when you sign up for a 2-year contract, and much more if you buy a phone off-contract.
But the Motorola Atrix HD breaks the mold. AT&T has announced it will soon offer this smartphone with a 4.5 inch, 720 x 1280 pixel ColorBoost display for $99 on-contract.
The Atrix HD isn’t exactly a top tier phone. But it’s no slouch either.
Update: It looks like the phone has the same chip found in the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III, and offers similar performance (although seriously subpar battery life).
It features a 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, and a microSDHC card for up to 32GB of additional space.
The phone runs Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and features a 1.3MP front-facing camera, an 8MP rear camera and has a 1780 mAh battery. It measures 8.4mm thick and weighs 4.9 ounces.
The Atrix HD supports AT&T’s new 4G LTE mobile broadband network.
haha, how is it not a top tier phone?
the same resolution found on other top tier phones? Check
1 gig of ram which is top tier? Check
8 mp camera which is found on other top tier phones? Check
top tier version of Android? Check
top tier battery size? Check
LTE ability which is found on top tier phones? Check
the same dual core cpu found in the top tier One X and S3? Check
While it does only have 8gig of storage, there is the microSD slot to deal with that and if my math is correct, 40gb of total space is greater than the non-expandable max of 32 for the One X.
To say this isn’t a top tier phone simply because of the lower price is idiotic and defies the reality which I just listed. Good to know this Brad Linder guy defines quality and “tiers” based on cost. I suppose I could release a piece of junk for 1000 bucks and it’d be beyond top tier.
8GB of storage is much less than you get in most top tier phones right now, and we don’t know which 1.5 GHz CPU it has yet. This seems like a mid-range phone… which in mid-2012 is a lot better than a top-of-the-line phone from 2011. That’s how technology goes.
Looks like the Atrix HD has the same Snapdragon chip as the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III — so I’ve updated the post. But the battery life leaves a bit to be desired.

The iPhone4 and Galaxy Nexus are two phones that have high resolution screens and comparable costs. The Atrix HD doesn’t look too bad though if you don’t mind not knowing if you will get Android updates later. The specs seem good but 8GB is weak.
On a budget?
