Barnes & Noble recently added over 100 comic book issues from DC comics to the NOOK Store, allowing NOOK Color and NOOK Tablet users to purchase and read Batman, Superman, and other comics on their tablets.

The company also released a minor software update adding zoom view in comics and graphics novels, 2-page mode in landscape for viewing PDF and PagePerfect documents, and a few other tweaks.

As usual, the software update can be a bit of a pain in the neck for anyone who rooted their tablet. If your NOOK Tablet downloaded the software version 1.4.3 update automatically, it probably also killed your root access and may have left you unable to launch some of the apps you’ve installed.

Fortunately it looks like you can easily root the NOOK Tablet again. The easiest way is probably to prepare a bootable microSD card and then reboot your NOOK Tablet with the flash card inserted.

You can also find a more involved step-by-step guide for rooting the NOOK Tablet and blocking it from downloading future software updates at the xda-developers forum.

One of the best ways to prevent a NOOK from downloading updates when you’re not looking is to chuck out the default software altogether and install a custom ROM such as CyanogenMod.

  1. I re-rooted my nook color after the 1.4.3 update had turned it into a mutant. I used the same root procedure that I used originally. (Using Wini32diskmager and clockwork 3.0.2.8 to make a bootable sd card and then used manualnooter 5.02.19 to complete the process. Now back to pre update rooted condition with no problems at all. I did run Titanium backup to get a snapshot of the current working condition which I should be able to use in case there’s another update down the road…

  2. I tried all the methods described here but my nook table 8gb with the update 1.4.3 ignores my sd card and boots up. I am having the same experience that bob is having.

  3. Half rooted…Well, I wasn’t aware that there was an update 1.4.3 released until my rooted nook dl’d and installed it…now when I first turn it on I do get the rooted machine but with some items not working…but if I go somewhere where there’s no back button, using the hardware home button only brings me back to the original non rooted machine. Any ideas of how I can fix this without rerooting the nook color again.

  4. Can you tell me if my nook table 8g using version 1.4.3 can be root again. Previously, it’s rooted, however, after B&N updated newest version, it’s unrooted.
    Thank you
