ASUS finally released a bootloader unlocking tool for the Transformer Pad Infinity (Transformer TF700T). The Infinity is an ultra-thin 10.1-inch Android tablet with a full HD (1920 x 1200) resolution display and both Wi-Fi and LTE models.
Unlocking the bootloader allows users to load custom ROMs onto the device and greatly increases the level of customization available. However, users who go through the unlocking process must register their device with ASUS.
As the XDA Developers blog points out, this means you’re “effectively relinquishing your warranty and handing it over on a silver platter.” So even if something goes wrong with the hardware, ASUS might throw up their hands and not help you.
The upside is that custom ROMs for the tablet will come soon. The group of people willing to flash these to their device often don’t worry much over warranties, anyway.
One note: looks like this unlock will only work on Ice Cream Sandwich. So if the Jelly Bean update ASUS promised comes through, don’t install it if you plan to go through the bootloader unlocking process.
This is all well and good but when is the tablet going to be released? I have the Transformer Prime and want to upgrade to the Infinity 700.
