You know what I really like about 2012 so far? Budget Android tablets look much, much better than they were a few years ago. The Coby Kyros MID9742, for instance, won’t be winning any performance awards. But for $200 it’s not a bad device for watching videos, reading books or playing games.

If you’re looking for something even cheaper, I just discovered a new 7 inch tablet called the Zeki TB782B. I only noticed the tablet because it showed up at the FCC website this week, but it’s already available for purchase from Sears for $139.99, and some early buyers seem to be pretty happy with the tablet.

Zeki TB782B

The Zeki TB782B features a 7 inch, 800 x 480 pixel capacitive touchscreen display, 1 GHz Allwinner A10 CPU, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, and Android 4.0.3 software.

It measures 7.7″ x 4.8″ x 0.5″ and weighs 0.77 pounds. The tablet has WiFi, a g-sensor, a front-facing camera, and microSD, mini-USB, and min-HDMI ports.

The tablet also appears to be pre-rooted, which means that while it doesn’t ship with the Google Play Store, it’s not that hard to download and install the Play Store and other Google apps manually if you’re comfortable with Android tablet hacking.

If there’s one major problem with this tablet, it’s the 2800mAh battery, which Zeki says is only good for about 3 hours of run time. Even for a $140 tablet, that’s kind of disappointing.

  1. My granddaughter accidently put a pattern password with the nine dots. anybody know how to get around it?

  2. This thing is garbage. It’s the cheapest p.o.s. ever. One month after I
received it as a Christmas gift, it won’t even turn on. I called the
ZEKI number that came with the thing, and they won’t do anything without
a sales receipt. I will NEVER recommend the brand to anyone. Not only
do their products suck, but their customer service sucks as well.

  3. Can a credit card reader like ‘Square’ be used with the Zeki TB782B?

  4. I have had the Zeki for couple months for $99 from Sears, and here are my observations:
    1. If unplugged battery dies in about 3 days tops. Can’t use till it is fully charged.
    2. Screen resolution is marginal. 1024 would have been a big help.
    3. Wifi card is slow. Reminded me of the older netbooks.
    4. Battery life less than three hours. I knew that going in.
    5. Could not find screen brightness controls.
    6. Manual does not discuss everything. Email support was fine, I give it 3.5 of 5.0
    7. Nothing beats Apples App store.
Still I kept it, I use it periodically, and keep it to familiarize myself with Android.

  5. I have the 7 inch zeki and love it. the battery for it last forever. I use it at my office as a computer and only need to charge it once a day. the performance is decent but slows a lot during background updates. but this can be set to only download on request. its not the best but you get more than expected for the price.

  6. movements are fluid in this tablet?
I’ve seen some videos and you look it takes to respond.

  7. Got mine at KMart for $109.99. Was a little disappointed it did not come with some sort of office suite or at least a memo pad, but I downloaded Kingsoft Office and it’ll do for now.

Biggest problem I’m having is compatibility with the Google Play Store.

  8. I got one and it really let me down …. First few hours I had it there were wifi connection issues. After returning it to and exchanging it I got a brand new one and just like the first one we were having WiFi issues. After finally getting access to the internet it kept randomly freezing up.Waste of time and money!

Just kick out the extra cash and get a more reputable brand!

  9. I purchased the 10″ version of this at KMart for 170. Truely amazing. No, it doesn’t have Google Play but it does have the Amazon App Store. If you are looking for a tablet that does everything the others does (maybe a smidgen slower and no high quality camera) then this is well worth it.

  10. just picked up two last night – kmart has them on sale for $99.99 – the hubby LOVES the HDMI cord that comes included, along with the headphones for this price. he has already watched movies on it and taken pictures – they really haven’t left out hands yet. Easy to work – we couldn’t decide between this and a 9.7″ they had, it was the HDMI that sold us along with the 8 gb already installed.

      1. I dont know about dowloading them but try crackle to stream them, but i cant even get utube to play without play for 15 sec, freeze for 45 sec, play for 15 sec,etc and thats on a full signal,2 feet from the wifi router,so good luck streaming a full movie,i have copied video podcasts on to it and watch them no problem through. and i think you can find crackle in google play store.

    1. It’s a good thing you didn’t pick up the 9.7″. I’ve never had so many problems with a tablet before this one in my life. I’m happily going to switch for the Zeki.

  11. I have noticed none of the expensive tablets have HDMI outputs, only the cheaper ones do. Doesnt make a lot of sense, as the HDMI output is a great feature. I use mine quite often.

  12. This tablet looks good but im a little scared to get it. Im thinking about just getting the Samsung galaxy tab 2 7″ it has a front and back camera but its 249.00 walmart

  13. Has anyone tried to modify some of the 7 inch tablets with 800×480 to add another screen with better resolution?   Would be really really interesting is Pixel Qi had a 7 inch dev kit to buy to replace these cheaper devices screens.
Is the 800×480 the screen itself, or would there be more to upgrading the screen to 1024×600?

  14. Get an Ainol Novo7 Elf II (Aliexpress) instead. Or next up 10.1″ the Cube U30GT (Pandawill). Both dualcore tablets with a very good pricepoint.

    1.  The Elf II looks very interest and is on sale for $120 in a couple of places, but they all seem to be grey imports from China, and the places that sell them don’t seem to have the greatest of reputations. I guess it’s a case of buyer beware. (They’re probably okay most of the time, if there is no problem with the purchase, but good luck trying to get your money back if there is a problem).

  15. 7″ Allwinner A10 tablets have come with 512MB of RAM / 4GB flash-storage so far, so this is a nice advancement (although with a 30% price hike since those are ~$100)
