The mintBox is a small desktop computer with a fanless design that ships with the Linux Mint operating system preloaded. As expected, it’s basically just a rebranded version of the Compulab fit-PC3, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Like the fit-PC3, the mintBox features a tiny and fanless case design, but packs a number of ports into the front and back of that case.

You get 2 USB 3.0 ports, 2 USB 2.0 ports, 2 eSATA ports, HDMI and DisplayPort, 7.1 channel S/PDIF and stereo audio ports, an Ethernet jack and Serial RS232 port. There’s a DVI adapter if you want to use a display that doesn’t support HDMI input.

The computer also features 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, and dual antennas.

Compulab and Mint are offering two versions of the mintBox:

mintBox Basic

  • 1 GHz AMD G-T40N dual core CPU with 9W TDP
  • Radeon HD 6290 graphics
  • 4GB of RAM
  • 250GB hard drive
  • flat metal case (6.3″ x 6.3″ x 1″)
  • $476

mintBox Pro

  • 1.65 GHz AMD G-T56N dual core CPU with 18W TDP
  • Radeon HD 6320 graphics
  • 8GB of RAM
  • 250GB hard drive
  • ribbed metal case (7.5″ x 6.3″ x 1.6″)
  • $549

The mintBox basic model is virtually identical to the Compulab fit-PC3 Basic 4GB Linux model, which sells for the same price. The only differences are the Linux Mint logo on the front of the case, and the percentage of the proceeds from sales that go to help fund development of the Linux Mint operating system.

Compulab doesn’t currently offer its own model with 8GB of RAM and Linux, so the mintBox Pro is a Mint exclusive.

On the other hand, the RAM and hard drive are both easily accessible — so you can buy the basic model and upgrade the memory and storage yourself.

Compulab is now taking orders for the mintBox, with units expected to ship in about two weeks.

  1. *rolleyes* A wallys special emachine in a smaller APU unit and for more money. Anyone know how theyre getting this, because glxgears still reporting 60fps no matter what I do. ATI6310HD in the wallys special.

  2. Anyone know what WiFi chip it uses? I know there’s a long standing issue for couple of years at least with Intel WiFi chips when connecting to 802.11n networks. The connection just hangs or becomes unusably slow (kbits/s). The best solution so far is to disable 802.11n and just use 802.11g.

  3. I am surprised to see a linux machine with ATI graphics. I wonder if it will ship with fully functional acceleration, or if it is just a vesa driver. Full GPU decoding and 3D would be something worth getting.
