Dell’s newest slim notebooks are now available for purchase in the US. The recently announced Inspiron 13z is an ultraportable notebook with a 13.3 inch display, while the Dell Inspiron 14z is an ultrabook with a 14 inch screen.

Dell Inspiron 14z ultrabook

The reason the larger model is called an ultrabook while the smaller notebook is not is that the 14z has a 32GB solid state disk for cache, as well as a large 500GB hard drive. The Inspiron 13z is only available with a hard drive, which means it may not be quite as responsive as its larger sibling and won’t support Intel Smart Connect features.

But the Inspiron 13z is also cheaper, with a starting price of $599.99. The Dell Inspiron 14z starts at $699.99.

Measuring about 0.8 inches thick, both laptops are a bit on the hefty side for ultraportables, with the smaller model weighing about 4 pounds and the 14 inch model tipping the scales at 4.6 pounds. That’s still pretty good by traditional notebook standards, but competitors offer ultrabooks or netbooks that weigh less than 3 pounds.

The Dell Inspiron 14z is available with a choice of Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge processors, up to 8GB of memory, and optional AMD graphics. It has a DVD drive, 2 USB 3.0 ports, HDMI output, and a 44 Whr battery.

The 13 inch model can be configured with Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge CPUs as well, but the options top out at a Core i5 processor, while you can get an Inspiron 14z with a Core i7 chip.

Dell’s Inspiron 13z features 3 USB 3.0 ports, HDMI output, a 44 Whr battery, and 6GB of RAM.

Both laptops have 1366 x 768 pixel displays.
