Asus was one of the first companies to bring ultrabooks to market. But up until now every member of the Asus Zenbook line of computers has featured 11.6 inch or 13.3 inch displays while other companies have started to bring 14 and 15 inch models to market.

Now Asus is preparing to introduce larger ultrabooks as part of the Asus S series.

Asus S Series ultrabook

The new models will feature 14 and 15 inch displays and measure 0.82 inches thick. That still puts them comfortably within Intel’s guidelines for larger ultrabooks.

Since the S Series ultrabooks are thicker than the smaller Asus Zenbook UX line of thin and light laptops, there’s room for extra ports. The new models feature HDMI, VGA, Ethernet, and D-SUB jacks, as well as a USB 3.0 port and 2 USB 2.0 ports.

Oh yeah, they also feature optical disc drives.

Asus uses the extra space to add a numeric keypad to the right side of the chiclet keyboard.

The Asus S series ultrabooks will be available with Intel Ivy Bridge processors and NVIDIA GeForce GT630M discrete graphics.

  1. Wait, no SD card reader?  I can live without an optical drive, but no Sd card reader is a deal breaker for me.  Also what are the RAM and HD specs?

  2. For a minute I thought you had sneak pics of the new macbooks…

On a serious note, those might actually be worth buying if they have the cooling worked out on those and the touchpads don’t suck.  ASUS seems to have figured out how to make a low profile keyboard with tactile feedback that doesn’t make you want to pull your liver out.

I especially like the optional discrete graphics.

Hopefully the screens don’t suck, and they have IPS options.
