BlackBerry PlayBook tablets with 4G radios have been showing up in the wild for a little while now, and there have been rumors that wireless carriers were testing the new tablets. But up until this week Research in Motion officials hadn’t confirmed that its new 4G PlayBook was on track to launch this year.
Now they have.
CEO Thorsten Heins says a 4G version of the tablet is on its way — but he didn’t provide any details about the price, release date, or even what wireless bands the tablet will support.
The BlackBerry PlayBook features a 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 1 GHz TI OMAP 4 dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, and up to 64GB of storage. It’s been available for over a year, but so far RIM has only offered a model with WiFi.
The new version will be able to connect to high speed mobile broadband networks, although you’ll likely have to pay for a data plan in order to do that — something which drives up the long term costs  of ownership.
