We’ve seen plenty of Android tablets with an Allwinner A10 ARM Cortex-A8 processor. But the folks at Shanzhaiben just spotted one of the first Android netbooks powered by an A10 chip.

Allwinner netbook

The computer features a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 1.1 GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of storage.

It runs Google Android 4.0 and supports HD video playback, WiFi, and Ethernet connections. The mini-laptop has an SD card slot, 3 USB ports, audio jacks, and offers up to 5 hours of battery life.

According to Shanzhaiben the system sells for 500 yuan, or about $79 — but it’s not clear if that’s the retail or wholesale price for the netbook.

The computer appears to have a large bezel around the display and a rather uninspired design. But even if the retail price after markup is $150 or so, it would be a pretty good price for an internet-connected computer with a full QWERTY keyboard — even if it’s running apps that were designed for tablets rather than laptops.

thanks aftermath!

  1. I’m missing the user guide for the Allwinner A10 which I bought from a friend. Anybody know a way I can get a replacement? Thanks.

  2. I am not sure that the Allwinner A10 is sufficiently powerful for netbook tasks. I am sure it runs Android with acceptable speed but Android is not very much suited for netbook tasks. Don’t forget it is primarily optimized for touch input and this machine has NO touch screen.

If it was eqipped with Ubuntu for Android, the utility factor would go up considerably but I think the hw is nowhere strong enough for that.

The Toshiba AC-100 was a similar machine (albeit with a stronger dual-core Tegra2 processor). That was a huge failure (which may be explained by the outlandish asking price but still).

I think this would be something desirable:
    –  a dual-core Cortex-A9 chip  at 1,5Ghz (e.g. the upcoming Rockchip RK3066 is designed for cheap machines like this)
    – 2Gb of DDR3 RAM to properly run Android & Ubuntu for Android
    – Ubuntu for Android properly installed and configured with LibreOffice, Firefox and other standard sw
    – A dedicated button to real-time switch between the Android interface & the Ubuntu for Android interface (although Android apps can run in windows under Ubuntu for Android)
    – 8GB built-in storage + a full-size SD slot (possibly 2 slots)
    – $150 end-user price

1024*600 is enough for a cheap netbook.

  3. Hmm.  Unless the weight is shockingly low the run time isn’t too impressive.  Especially since it has no HDD.

And I’d really like at least 1GB ram, then I’d be lusting after it to dump android and load up a proper Linux distro.

    1. The Allwinner A10 machines usually offer 512MB of RAM.
Possible, it comes integrated to the SOC.

  4. Allwinner A10 also supports Linux and there are growing number of support forums for porting distros to it.

    1.  Yes, this is a strength of the Allwinner A10.

For netbook tasks, ubuntu would be a much better choice, so it would matter a lot if you can replace Android with Ubuntu on this machine.

Ubuntu for Android would be even better but the hw is too weak for that.
