The Lenovo IdeaTab S2109 is an unusual tablet by Android tablet standards. It has a 9.7 inch, 1024 x 768 pixel IPS display which makes it look a bit more like an iPad or HP TouchPad than the widescreen 7, 9, and 10 inch tablets that are all the rage these days.

We first spotted this tablet in an FCC listing last month, but now Lenovo is making the S2109 official, with a product tour posted on the company’s YouTube channel.

Update: The Lenovo IdeaTab S2109 goes on sale in the US in June for $349.

The tablet features a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual core processor, Android 4.0 operating system, and a 1.3 MP front-facing camera. It has a microHDMI port, microSD card slot, and a unibody case that’s 0.35 inches thick.

Lenovo says the tablet should get up to 10 hours of battery life. It features 4 speakers, SRS audio, and an IPS display with 178 degree viewing angles.

There’s no information about the release date or price yet.

  1. are there higher res 9.7inch screens with 4:3 aspect ratio? i mean aside from the new iPad ofcourse. maybe somewhere in between the new iPad’s resolution the the TouchPad’s..

  2. I hope Lenovo’s new offering is more reliable than the IdeaPad K1 tablet.  The K1 had product problems, which is probably why Lenovo discontinued it before its life cycle ran out.

Lenovo is one of the more reliable brands.   In a recent Laptop Magazine survey, Lenovo was no. 2 to Apple in reliability.  (A PC Magazine survey has it mid-pack.)  While ThinkPads have been very reliable, IdeaPads seem to be less so.

  3. I like that screen resolution.  Well the aspect ratio, but still.  I prefer the 4:3 in this form factor because it tends to present a better view of the information I am looking up than the 16:9 which tends to be either too narrow or too short depending on orientation and less than ideal at anything besides watching movies…

That said, 1024×768 is looking a little staid right now, and they might have wanted a higher resolution (dpi) display, even if they weren’t trying to match Apple’s ‘retina’ display.

    1.  1024×768 is still perfectly fine for this size screen.  Mind the iPad’s retina display comes at a cost.  The back light consumes 30% more power and would require a more powerful GPU to run it properly.

Apple had to increase the battery size by 70% to compensate but that’s not something many others can do.

So until they can improve the power efficiency and the next gen ARM chips come out to provide the needed performance then don’t expect too many higher res screens quite yet.  These things take time and the LCD market changes more slowly than the rest of the market.
