The Polaroid 701i isn’t a very good Android tablet. But it is a very cheap Android tablet. It runs Google Android 4.0 and normally sells for less than $150, and right now Big Lots is offering the tablet for $99.99.

The only catch is that the deal is good in stores only. You can’t order online.

Polaroid 701i

In addition to the Android 4.0 software, here’s what you get for a hundred bucks:

  • 7 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display
  • 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 single core processor
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 4GB of storage
  • OpenGL ES 2.0 support
  • 802.11b/g/n WiFI
  • microSD card slot
  • video output

The Polaroid 701i ships without the Google Play Store, but the folks at the xda-developers forum discovered that the tablet comes pre-rooted. That means installing the Play Store is pretty easy — assuming you’ve had some experience working with rooted Android phones or tablets.

At $100, the Polaroid 701i looks like a pretty good deal for anyone looking for a dirt cheap tablet for web browsing, playing games, or other basic activities. It might make a good first tablet or a tablet for a child.

But the tablet has a low resolution display and reportedly has poor viewing angles, so it’s probably not the best choice for reading eBooks, surfing the web, or watching videos. In fact, if you already have an Android smartphone, odds are it already has a higher quality screen.

  1. So far this seems like a great tablet. We’ve had it for a week, and only one problem so far.

When I load videos onto a micro SDHC card, and insert it, the video player I
installed (SuperPlayer) won’t recognize it. It only “sees” the videos
    on the tablet’s internal memory.

But I know that the micro SDHC card works – because when I look using the File Explorer, all the videos are there, and I can access the contents, and play the videos that way. But this is awkward and frustrating for my young child.

How can I get the regular apps to see the contents of the SD card? Do I have to
create a directory with special name? Do I need to download an app to format this card in a certain way? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If it matters, this is the video player that I am trying to use.

  2. I got one yesterday the screen has come up with 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 ? cant get it to go away and looks like u need to put a password in? I cannot get it to go away, Has anyone seen this ? And it keeps gon black?

  3. I have a Polaroid pmid 701c and couldn’t be happier. I use it as a reader, check email, get on the internet, play Birds, listen to music, watch avi files and youtube…..pretty much everything i that can do on my big laptop, but in a convenient take along size. Is the screen crystal clear? No, but it’s more than adequate. Is it blazing fast? No, but it’s fast enough. Does it have all the bells and whistles? No, but I’ve never needed them and that’s not why I bought this. I’ve never had a problem running out of power, but this isn’t my main computer, either.

I bought mine from Lots for $89 about three months ago and added a 32 gb micro sd card for under $20. TRY finding something that big for $110. Oh, and I have a cover with a keyboard I picked up for $10. It’s a pretty nice set up.

If you HAVE to be on the cutting edge, this isn’t for you. But if you want something that gets the job done and saves you money, the 701c is worth looking at.

    I’m on it right now.

  4. This thing frustrates me and my 6 year old Kid … its a piece and a gamble when downloading apps. we may end up using it as a coaster for our drinks.

  5. Just bought one yesterday and I’m impressed for the price ! Great for facebook ,checking email and watching youtube videos and even searching the web for stuff like this 🙂

  6. Just picked up the C model of this to use as a point of purchase device with the Square card reader.   In portrait mode, the viewing angle makes the screen weird, in landscape though, it’s fine. If you’re the only one using it, videos look just fine.

Played angry birds just to see, runs great, no stuttering.

I don’t really like the Android OS, it’s clunky and unrefined.  It’s hard to do simple things like scroll through apps without activating one.

But, I’d get this in an instant for a kid, or as a budget device.

Forgot to mention it doesn’t come with Android Market/Google Play, but you can force install it from an SD card.

    1. Does it work with the square card reader and if so can you print a receipt?

  7. I bought one a few days ago. It is surprisingly a nice device for the price. I ended up returning it because the screen quality is not very good. It is good for a device of this price, but I’m spoiled by the iPad2 and Kindle Fire screens.

If I was on a budget and wanted an Android tablet, I’d certainly buy it and keep it.

  8. I bought this model and for the price, its great. I think it has good functionality and a nice screen.

  9. It looks very similar to the Onda vx610w. Does it have an allwinner A10 and mali 400 gpu running inside?
