Amazon has released a software update for the Amazon Kindle Touch that lets you hold the 7 inch eBook reader in landscape mode, customize the language settings, or access more options for sharing passages from eBooks.

Kindle Touch software version 5.1 is available for download from the Amazon website, where you’ll also find instructions for updating your Kindle.

The new software lets you switch between portrait and landscape orientation through a menu option. Since there’s no accelerometer or g-sensor in the Kindle Touch there’s no support for automatic screen rotation like you get with the Kindle Fire and other tablets.

Amazon also now lets you set your preferred language with options for French, German, Italian, or Brazilian Portuguese. There are also US and UK English options.

Along with the system language, there’s now support for in-book translations. You can highlight a word or passage and translate text to another language. You’ll need to have WiFi turned on to use this feature, since it’s powered by Microsoft’s Bing Translator.

Other updates in Kindle Touch software version 5.1 include:

  • Kindle Format 8 support for rich-media eBooks
• Additional sharing options that let you share what you’re reading on Facebook or Twitter
  • Suggestions appear as you’re typing with the on-screen keyboard
  • WPS and WPA2 WiFi network security are now supported

For now you’ll need to connect your Kindle to a PC with a USB cable to install the update. Amazon may roll out this or future software updates over the air eventually.
