There are more than a dozen great video players available for Google Android, but most are designed for smartphones. Sure, you can use them on tablets, but few actually take advantage of the extra screen space to show you cover art or video details.

And then there’s mVideoPlayer HD. It might not be the most versatile video player for Android tablets, but it’s certainly one of the prettiest.

mVideoPlayer HD

This new app for Android tablets is available as a free download while in beta. It automatically identifies TV shows and movies and displays cover art for your video collection on the main page.

You can also sort TV shows by season, view descriptions and run times, and see other details before you click play.

The app supports video subtitles in a variety of formats and even includes a subtitle search engine.

The video app supports whatever file formats and codecs are natively supported by your device — so if your tablet can handle MKV and DiVX videos using the default video player, mVideoPlayer should be able to play them as well. But unlike some other video apps, it doesn’t use software decoders to play files that aren’t natively supported by your tablet’s hardware.

mVideoPlayer HD is still a work in progress. The developer plans to add support for bookmarks and playlists in a future build.

Once the video player is out of beta, odds are you’ll have to pay to keep using it — or put up with ads in the user interface. There’s a free, ad-supported version of mVideoPlayer for smartphones and a $3.99 Pro version. You can use them on tablets too, if you like, but you won’t get the new tablet-sized user interface.
