Google is rebranding all of its digital media services as Google Play. No longer are the Android Market, Google Music, and Google Books separate sites. Instead, there’s a one-stop-shop for buying digital goods from Google or streaming content over the internet: Google Play.

Google Play

You can still upload as many as 20,000 songs to Google Music… I mean Google Play, download apps or games, rent videos, or download eBooks. You just do it at the new website.

Google will also be rolling out updated Android apps with the new branding soon, so the Android Market app will be replaced with the Google Play Store, while Google Music will become Google Play Music. New book and movie apps are also on the way.

Not all of the digital content will be available in all regions of the globe.

On the one hand, it makes a lot of sense for Google to combine all these services into one place. On the other hand, it seems a little silly to say you just bought the latest office suite, novel, or utility for creating Android software at a site called “Play.”

The good news is that Google is offering deep discounts on music, books, and videos over the next 7 days to promote the new brand.

  1. Unification is a good idea but couldn’t they have made it “Google Market” instead? Google Play just isn’t a good name at all and most users already recognize “Market”, how many people would honestly instantly recognize “Google Play” for “Market”?

  2. Any idea if the Android Marketplace will auto-update to the Google Play Store on my CM9 Touchpad, or will I need to install a new gapps zip file through Clockworkmod?
