Just over a week after releasing the first build of Android 4.0 for the Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet , developer chrmhoffmann has released a new build which eliminates many of the problems that had affected the first build.

NOOK Tablet with CyanogenMod 9

The biggest improvement in CyanogenMod 9 Alpha 0.1 is that I can actually tap the power button to turn off the tablet and then tap it again a few minutes later to turn it back on.]

When I tried CyanogenMod 9 Alpha 0, the power button was basically a “freeze device” button. Pressing it would turn off the display… and then the only way to access the device again would be to press and hold the power and NOOK buttons for about 20 seconds to force a reboot.

Version 0.1 also offers better power management, an option to reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery from the power-off menu, and fewer random reboots.

Unfortunately there’s still no support for hardware video acceleration so Netflix and HD YouTube video won’t play. The built-in mic also isn’t supported.

But WiFi, storage, touch, and screen rotation all work.

You can download the latest version of CyanogenMod 9 from the link at the xda-developers forum. You can also find basic instructions for installing CyanogenMod 9 from scratch there.

But if you’ve already installed CyanogenMod 7 or CM9 Alpha 0, you can update simply by placing the update ZIP file in your device storage and booting into ClockworkMod to install update from zip file. It’s probably a good idea to perform a data wipe/factory reset while you’re at it before rebooting.

If you want to install the Google Play Store, Gmail app, and other Google applications, you can download the latest version of gApps from CyanogenMod and flash them using ClockworkMod as well.

You can find more details in our guide for installing CyanogenMod 7 on the NOOK Tablet, which is based on Android 2.3. Just follow the same steps… but use the CM9 Alpha 0.1 files instead of the CM7 files.

  1. Does the update work if CM7 is on an SD Card already? I have been using CM7 for some time now and have it configured how I want it with the apps I want, etc. By the way…thanks for all the hard work on this! Excellent!

  2. I’m uber-exited for the next release and the integration of graphics acceleration. Also, very glad that they added the on-screen dual boot option, into this build.

  3. the built-in mic worked for me on Alpha 0 (using Google Voice Search and Iris)
