Coby introduced a new line of low-cost tablets with Android 4.0 software at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. Now the first of these tablets are available for purchase, with prices running between $150 and$280.

Coby tablet with Android 4.0

All of Coby’s new tablets feature 1 GHz Allwinner ARM Cortex-A8 single core processors, 1GB of RAM, and capacitive multitouch displays. But they differ in screen size.

  • Coby MID7042 – 7 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display
  • Coby MID8042 – 8 inch, 800 x 600 pixel display
  • Coby MID9042 – 9 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display
  • Coby MID9742 – 9.7 inch, 1024 x 768 pixel display
  • Coby MID1042 – 10 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display
  • Coby MID10245 – 10 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display

The 9 inch and larger tablets have 8GB of storage, while the 7 and 8 inch models have 4GB. They all have microSDHC card slots, HDMI and USB ports and front-facing cameras.

Coby’s entry-level 7 inch tablet sells for a little over $150, while the 8 inch model is closer to $200. The MID9042 is priced at about $240, and the MID9742 sells for close to $250.

The Coby MID1042 is available for about $240 and up. The top-of-the-line MID1045 is available from several retailers with prices ranging from $260 to $280.

The good news is that these tablets all look a bit nicer than earlier models from Coby and run the latest Android software. The bad news is that they ship without support for the Google Play Store or other Google apps such as Gmail or Google Maps. Instead they come preloaded with the GetJar app store.

They also aren’t exactly the most responsive Android tablets on the market. But they’re some of the cheapest.
