Asus plans to launch a new thin and light laptop soon — but the Asus U82U won’t be a member of the Asus Zenbook family of ultrabooks. That’s because Intel holds the trademark on ultrabooks, but the U82U will be powered by an AMD processor.

Asus U82U

According to the Asus Facebook page, this will allow the company to offer a a lightweight notebook with a 14 inch display for a “cost effective” price.

The Asus U82U won’t be quite as svelte as the company’s ultrabooks. It will weigh a little under 4 pounds, while the 13.3 inch Asus Zenbook US31 is just 2.9 pounds. But I suspect the new model will be considerably cheaper.

The laptop will have an AMD E-450 dual core processor, 2GB of DDR3 memory, a 500GB hard drive, 2 USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port, HDMI output, and an 8 cell battery — although specifications will probably vary from region to region.

Judging by the user manual found on the Asus support support site, the battery should be removable and there’s an access panel on the bottom of the laptop which should make RAM and hard drive upgrades easy.

  1. Smexy.  Too bad they can’t get Llano in there.  Can’t wait to see what Trinity can do in this form factor as well.

That said I’m not sold on larger form factor brazos systems.  The CPU is better than ATOM but really up to the kind of experience you’d expect out of a 14″ system if you like to do anything serious with your computer.
