Acer is reportedly working on a new thin and light laptop with a 15 inch display and a fiberglass case. Digitimes reports that Taiwanese equipment maker Pegatron has already started producing the new ultrabook for Acer.

Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3

Most ultrabooks on the market today have 11 to 13 inch displays, but laptop makers are pushing the boundaries with 14 and 15 inch models. In order to qualify as ultrabooks they still tend to be thin and light, weighing less than 4 pounds and measuring less than an inch thick.

A fiberglass case would help the Acer model to stay withing the weight limits while providing a sturdy frame.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a 15 inch ultrabook from Acer. The company’s Aspire Timeline Ultra M3 laptop has a 15 inch screen, an optical disc drive, and NVIDIA Kepler graphics.

No matter how light it is, a 15 inch laptop isn’t going to be quite as portable as a model with a 10 or 11 inch screen. But I can’t say I’m disappointed that it’s become trendy to make laptops that don’t weigh as much as a small automobile.
