NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 chip isn’t the only quad-core processor designed for phones and tablets… it’s just the first to show up in products that are actually shipping. But NVIDIA may not have the market to itself much longer. Samsung is starting to show off it’s new quad-core processor.
The new Samsung Exynos 4 chip has four ARM Cortex-A9 processor cores with clock speeds between 200 MHz and 1.5 GHz. The 32nm chip also has ARM Mali graphics.
Samsung started showing off the chip earlier this month and it’s expected to make an appearance at Mobile World Congress next week — although it could sitll be a while before we start to see phones or tablet designed to use the new processor.
The company is also beginning to work on its first ARM Cortex-A15 processor, the dual-core Exynos 5250 chip. That model will probably compete with the upcoming TI OMAP 5 Cortex-A15 chip and whatever next-gen products NVIDIA and Qualcomm have in the hopper.
